An 18th-century oak salt chair

Having a rectangular back with a hinged seat above a raised and fielded panel, with a skirted base and  turned forefeet

Salt chairs were designed to hold salt inside the hinged top. Salt was an expensive commodity in the 18th century, and the lady of the house would sit on the chair as a security measure to guard the salt, usually beside the fire.
