Spode was a significant innovator in transfer printing, a technique that revolutionized the decoration of ceramics. Josiah Spode I, in particular, is credited with perfecting underglaze blue transfer printing on earthenware in the late 1780s, enabling the mass production of beautiful, affordable decorated pottery. Spode’s technique involved engraving designs onto copper plates, transferring them to biscuit-fired ware using a cobalt compound and gummed tissue, and then firing the glaze. This method was a more efficient and cost-effective way of decorating pottery compared to hand-painting, making it accessible to a wider audience.
