Sunderland Bridge commemoratives are antique glasses, typically tumblers or rummers, that were created to celebrate the opening of the Sunderland Bridge in 1796. These glasses often depict the bridge and a ship, and they were made for about 30-35 years after the bridge’s opening, while it was a popular tourist attraction. The Sunderland Bridge, also known as the Wearmouth Bridge, was a major engineering achievement of the time, and its opening was a significant event. The bridge was built across the River Wear in Sunderland.
Sunderland Bridge commemoratives often feature a depiction of the bridge and a ship, sometimes with initials or other personalized details. Sea captains and wealthy traders would have purchased them as souvenirs, sometimes commissioning them with initials before voyages and collecting them on their return.
