A rare antique Georgian Davenport stone china B&W pottery Muffin Dish C.1830

A superb Davenport stone chine pottery muffin dish printed in medium to dark blue with the Two Temples chinoiserie pattern, the inner borders with distinctive gilt beading. The rims and finial also finished in gold. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little sign of wear. Rare to find items from this period in such good order. Both pieces printed in blue with the early Davenport Stone China mark and the dish with painted pattern number 142 in red (the highest recorded number in the stone china pattern book c1830 when stone china production ceased).

John Davenport, born in 1765, is said to have begun potting in 1785, first as a workman, and later as a partner with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke. He acquired his own pottery at Longport for the manufacture of earthenware in 1794. In 1830 he retired, and his two sons Henry and William carried on the firm until 1835, when Henry died. This style of the firm then became William Davenport and Company. William died in 1869, and his two sons took over the direction of the business, which remained in the family until 1887.
