Description
A beautiful example of a Scandinavian 18th century birch peg tankard, this will make a lovely display piece and a wonderful addition to a collection of treen. The lion decoration represents the Norwegian royal emblem and these pieces were often used at wedding feasts.
– Recumbent lion on the thumb lift lid hinge.
– Carved handle and a stylised leaping lion with flowing mane carved into the lid.
– Handle is pegged into the body.
– Stands on 3 feet.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There is a crack in the lid by the hinge and an old repair is evident, but this shows the aged character of a piece which is around 250 years old.
