Description
A grand painted terracotta bust of the charming Madame Du Barry, this large and heavy piece is after the artist Augustin Pajou and is inscribed on the reverse “Portrait De Madame La Comtesse Du Bary Par Pajou Secul Du Roy E. Professeur De Son Acad De Pint E Scul 1773”. The beautiful Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry, was the last chief mistress of King Louis XV of France and lived at Versailles. She was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. This wonderful bust has been painted to give it the appearance of bronze and will make a handsome addition to a grand room.
Dating to circa 1900, this is made of painted terracotta and originates from France.
In good age related condition, this has only two very minor nibbles to the terracotta along an edge at the back, revealing the colour of the clay, but these are small and the piece is in generally nice condition.
