Fontana Arte is an Italian design company specializing in glass processing and the production of high-end lighting and furniture. Founded in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana, it has established itself as one of the most iconic brands of Italian design thanks to its ability to combine elegance, innovation and craftsmanship.
Since its beginnings, Fontana Arte has been distinguished by its refined use of curved, mirrored and satin-finished glass, applied to furnishings, lamps and decorative objects. In the 1950s, under the artistic direction of Max Ingrand, the company reached a period of great success, creating iconic pieces.
In addition to Ingrand, Fontana Arte has collaborated with some of the world’s leading designers, including Gae Aulenti, who relaunched the brand in the 1970s and 1980s, and other prominent names such as Pietro Chiesa and Carlo Colombo.
Even today, Fontana Arte is synonymous with excellence in Italian design, with collections that blend tradition and innovation, making each piece a true work of art.
Max Ingrand (1908-1969) was a celebrated French glass master, designer and decorator, best known for his role as art director of Fontana Arte from 1954 to 1967. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris, he initially specialized in stained glass windows for churches and public buildings, and then turned to lighting and crystal furniture design.
Under his direction, Fontana Arte went through a phase of great innovation, creating lamps and furnishing accessories with essential and elegant shapes, often made of thick crystal and metal.
His research into light and transparency made him a pioneer in crystal working, leaving an indelible mark on 20th-century design. Today, his works are considered collector’s pieces, prized for their timeless aesthetic and extraordinary quality of craftsmanship.
