Vintage Red Hand-Woven Oriental Bokhara Rug, 1960s

This hand-woven oriental Bokhara rug was made in Pakistan during the 1960s. Woven in the traditional way – flat technique, with the addition of cashmere and natural dyed in shades of rustic red and ivory. Repeating, geometric patterns are the central part of this symmetrically woven rug.

Bokhara rugs are a traditional type of rug with a characteristic pattern and origin from the Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The patterns on these rugs are inspired by the fabrics of Turkmen tribes, especially the Tekke tribe. Bokhara rugs have a very characteristic pattern, which usually consists of repeating geometric motifs, most often oval or rhomboidal Gul shapes. This pattern is arranged in rows and columns, often surrounded by borders in the form of smaller geometric patterns. Traditional Bokhara rugs have warm, deep colors, such as red, burgundy, dark blue, beige, as well as various shades of brown. These colours are obtained with natural dyes. Usually made of wool, and sometimes with the addition of silk, which gives them softness and a delicate shine. The rug is in original vintage condition. It has signs of wear related to age, minor losses in the fleece and fringes. A slightly torn fragment on the side. Before shipping, the rug will be professionally cleaned and will be ready for use.
