This exquisite portrait of a young woman from the 19th century offers a captivating glimpse into the artistic sensibilities of the era.
The portrait is signed on the bottom right in red G. Puricelli (see photo). Attributable to the Italian painter Giuseppe Puricelli born in Gallarate (Italy) on September 4, 1825, died in Casirate d’Adda (Italy) on July 17, 1894 as per plate on the frame, without authentication.
This portrait of the young woman, dressed in simple yet elegant clothing and adorned with a fashionable black hat, epitomizes the style of the era. The artist’s choice to depict her in three-quarter view, with her head slightly bowed and her gaze contemplative, evokes a sense of mystery and introspection.
The Expressionist influence of the work is evident, with strong emotional undercurrents that elevate the portrait beyond mere representation. The artist’s ability to convey the subject’s inner world through subtle details and the play of light and shadow is a testament to his artistic skill and vision.
Accompanied by a beautiful gilded wooden frame, the portrait has undergone restoration and re-lining, ensuring its preservation for future generations. This piece would make a significant addition to any collection of old master portraits, offering an exceptional example of 19th century portraiture that resonates with emotion and artistry.
